It stands on a lower ridge of the main plateau and is surrounded by many scenic picnic spots.
Coonoor is a town and municipality in the Nilgiris district, in the state of Tamilnadu, India. It is known for its production of Nilgiri tea. Coonoor is located at an altitude of 1850m above sea level and is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiri hills. It is an ideal base for a number of trekking expeditions leading into the Nilgiris. Coonoor's economy relies on seasonal tourist traffic during the summer months and on the tea industry all year round.

The weather in Coonoor is always pleasant and enjoyable. Coonoor experiences three distinct seasons - summer, winter and monsoon. The summer season is from March until May/June. The temperature during this period touches a high of 37 °C and a low of 22 °C. It is the most pleasant among all the other seasons and an ideal time to watch the picturesque grandeur of the place. The coming of July marks the arrival of monsoon. Coonoor receives mild to medium rainfalls, which make the climate humid. During this time, this picturesque hill station is replete with lush green sceneries. The monsoon gives way to the winters. December, January and February are the coldest months of the year. The temperature at this time lies somewhere between 10 °C to 20 °C.
